The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit plans to open its doors Tuesday to show a broadcast of the public memorial for Michael Jackson in Los Angeles.

The broadcast of the memorial service will shown on a large screen at the museum. There is no admission charge for the gathering in Detroit. Seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

More than 1.2 million people registered to get tickets for Jackson's memorial service at Staples Center in Los Angeles. Only 11,000 tickets will be given out and another 6,500 tickets will be given away for the Nokia Theater overflow section next door.

A candlelight vigil to remember Jackson's life and legacy was held last weekend at the original home of Motown Records in Detroit. The historic Hitsville USA building was the launching pad for the late pop superstar's career.

People have visited Hitsville following Jackson's death to pay their respects to the international icon.

Sidebar: Tomorrow is going to be the day that reality finally hits me..He’s really gone! Although, I’ve been to tribute parties, and watched the news every day since his death…I have yet to really internalize the fact that he’s gone and I will never have a chance to see the greatest entertainer ever alive..ever again!! As I was completing this post, I realized that I took for granted that he would always be here and that some day I would get a chance to witness his magnificence in person. For now, I can only watch countless hours of video footage, documentaries, the news, and old interviews in a desperate attempt to capture the essence of the Great One. We will miss u MJ…!!RIP!

July 1-5: Comerica Cityfest Celebration begins in New Center

July 2, 2009 at 12:25 am (Special Events)

cityfest

Comerica Cityfest 2009 will celebrate its 21st birthday, Wednesday, July 1 – Sunday, July 5. Michigan’s largest neighborhood festival is back with al fresco dining and a four stage extravaganza presenting one of its most diverse and powerful line-up of musical acts to date.

Comerica Cityfest will maintain its extended hours offering a great time in Detroit’s Historic New Center from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday, and 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday.

Founded in 1989 as a fundraiser for New Center Council, the annual music, food and cultural event has been continually improved and reinvented. It was renamed Comerica Cityfest in 2007 to reflect the event’s maturing into a celebration of city life: a locally and nationally recognized cultural experience offering a diverse mix of restaurants, musicians, merchants, artists and children’s activities.

Admission to Comerica Cityfest is free. “Taste” tickets are $10 for 16 tickets.
