JUNE 19: Michigan Chronicle Presents Pancakes and Politics at the DAC

Michigan Chronicle Pancakes & Politics annual series, will continue with the fourth forum on Thursday, June 19, 2009 at the Detroit Athletic Club at 7:30 a.m.

As the hot topics and issues facing the Detroit continue to unfold and even receive national media attention, Pancakes & Politics was designed to create the much needed dialogue between business, civic and community leaders to outline potential solutions.

The hard hitting series will continue on June 19, 2009 with Forum Four—“Education 911: a discussion about the state of DPS and a the current education crisis and explore ways to boost economic development for the betterment of the DPS system. The event will feature top notables such as Carol Goss, CEO of Skillman Foundation, Robert Bobb, DPS Emergency Financial Manager, Keith Johnson, President of Detroit Federation of Teachers.

JUNE 24: Model D Speaker Series

Model D, Detroits leading weekly e-zine and web site, is hosting a series of speaker series about various topics related to progressing Detroit. This week they will take on a hot topic: the foreclosure crisis. Foreclosures have hit the Detroit metro area like the plague and Detroit leads the nation in foreclosures.

They will talk to Detroiters getting creative and bold in the face of a mortgage crisis. Local public radio station WDET 101.9 FM will join us to moderate the conversation, in conjunction with their “Facing the Mortgage Crisis” ongoing series, which started this week.

The speakers will include:

Joy Santiago, a Detroit Realtor who has been featured on HGTV programs.

Kim Ross-Clayson, president of The Villages CDC, a community development group that serves several East Side neighborhoods.

Luther Keith, executive director of ARISE Detroit!, a coalition of nonprofits, many of which are helping individuals and communities deal with foreclosure and neighborhood preservation.

James Hamilton, president of the Historic Boston-Edison Association.

The event will be at 5 p.m. June 24 at the Magic Stick inside the Majestic complex on Woodward in Midtown. It’s free, but you must sign up in advance.

The hour-long program begins at 5:30 p.m., and networking time will follow.
